n engl j med 362;4 nejm.org january 28, 2010 370 180 unselected patients with chronic-phase polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia. Among the five patients with IDH mutations, three harbored an IDH1 R132C substitution and two harbored a novel IDH2 R140Q mutation affecting a residue conserved in mouse, yeast, and plant homologues. In Patient 2, an IDH2 R140Q mutation was detected in erythroid colonies with a JAK2 mutation as well as in leukemic blasts (Fig. 1A), indicating that this alteration was acquired early during the progression to leukemia and is not responsible for the block in cellular differentiation that occurs in acute leukemia. Leukemic cells arising from myeloproliferative neoplasms with a JAK2 mutation are commonly JAK2 wild-type,4 although the mechanism by which they become wild-type is unknown. Among the five samples of leukemia cells carrying an IDH mutation, three samples lacked the JAK2 mutation. In two of these three samples, an IDH mutation was present in leukemic blasts with wild-type JAK2 but absent from progenitor colonies with a JAK2 mutation (Fig. 1B), establishing the presence of two separate clonal expansions in each patient. In these cases, the separate JAK2-mutant and IDH-mutant clones may represent the shared progeny of an ancestral abnormal clone or the coexistence of two distinct disorders with independent origins.5

Absence of cross‐reactive antibodies to influenza A (H1N1) 2009 before and after vaccination with 2009 Southern Hemisphere seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine in children aged 6 months–9 years: a prospective study
BACKGROUND Early outbreaks of the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus predominantly involved young children, who fuelled transmission through spread in homes and schools. Seroprevalence studies conducted on stored serum collections indicated low levels of antibody to the novel strain in this age group, leading many to recommend priority immunisation of paediatric populations. OBJECTIVES In...
متن کاملCaregivers' intentions regarding pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza vaccination for their children.
To THE EDITOR: Children have been seen as a key priority group for pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza ("swine flu") vaccination. In Australia and New Zealand, children aged 04 years had the highest population rate of intensive care unit admissions for swine flu.' From 3 December 2009, the Australian Government provided free H1N1-specific influenza vaccine for all Australians aged 6 months and older...
متن کاملPost-Pandemic Seroprevalence of Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Infection (Swine Flu) among Children <18 Years in Germany
BACKGROUND We determined antibodies to the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus in children to assess: the incidence of (H1N1) 2009 infections in the 2009/2010 season in Germany, the proportion of subclinical infections and to compare titers in vaccinated and infected children. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Eight pediatric hospitals distributed over Germany prospectively provided sera from...
متن کاملHigh Titers of Hemagglutination Inhibition Antibodies against 2009 H1N1 Influenza Virus in Southern Iran
Background: Pandemic flu had at least two waves in Iran. Knowing how many of the general population were already exposed to this infection has a major impact on na-tional preventive measures. As of December 30, 2009, a total of 3672 confirmed cases of human infection with a novel Influenza A (2009 H1N1) virus had been reported in Iran with 140 deaths. Objective: In this study we aim to measure,...
متن کاملA novel influenza A (H1N1) vaccine in various age groups.
BACKGROUND There is an urgent need for a vaccine that is effective against the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus. METHODS A split-virus, inactivated candidate vaccine against the 2009 H1N1 virus was manufactured, and we evaluated its safety and immunogenicity in a randomized clinical trial. Subjects were between 3 and 77 years of age, stratified into four age groups. The immunization sch...
متن کاملSeasonal Outbreak of Influenza A virus Infection in Pediatric Age Groups During 2004-2005 in South of Iran
Background: The pandemic and regional influenza outbreaks resulting from antigenic variation of influenza viruses have been the subject of numerous studies which are crucial to the preparation of the vaccine. Frequent global winter outbreaks of influenza viruses require a constant surveillance of emerging influenza variants in order to develop efficient influenza vaccine. Methods: This study wa...
